Source: https://commonyard.app/llms.txt · Built: 2026-10-12 · Contact: hello@commonyard.app ## Common questions ### What is CommonYard? CommonYard is a free social app. People vote in polls, take sides on opinions, sign petitions, swipe through pictures, play games, and chat — and they do it in yards, communities for their school, their faith group, their friends or anyone. Its line is: Find your people. Play, talk, and take part. See What is CommonYard? for the longer answer. ### Is CommonYard free? Yes. Joining and taking part are free. The points you earn are credits for taking part, not cash. ### Do I need to download an app? No. CommonYard runs in your phone’s browser or on a computer at commonyard.app. You can put it on your home screen so it opens like an app. ### How do I join? Open commonyard.app and look around. When you tap to vote, sign or join a yard, CommonYard asks you to join and keeps your pick while you do. You can join with Google, Apple or your phone number. On a new phone, sign in the same way you joined. ### What is a yard? A yard is a community inside CommonYard — for a school, a church or mosque, a family, a team, or anything people share. Anyone can make one. A yard has its own posts, chat, events and the people who run it. ### What can I do on CommonYard? Vote in polls, take a side on an opinion, sign petitions, swipe through a swipey, react and reply, take a shot at a troll, post your own pictures, videos or words — in parts as a series, or anonymously as an opinion — play games alone or with others, and chat in your yards. Every one of those is a tap or two on the card in front of you. See the guides for each one. ### How is RateYourSociety connected to CommonYard? RateYourSociety (RYS) is Ghana’s public-opinion platform, started in June 2023 by the same founder. It now lives inside CommonYard, and one account works for both. RYS keeps its own page, Ghana’s Mood, at rateyoursociety.com. ### Who made CommonYard? Ronald Dumeloo, a product builder. He also created RateYourSociety. ### Who can make a yard? Anyone with an account. On HOME, tap Find a yard beside your yards, then Can’t find yours? at the bottom, and pick its starting shape: School (adds Practice for revising school work), Faith (adds the devotional, the prayer wall and the week’s times) or General. See Make a yard. ### Can a yard be private? Yes. A yard is public or private: a public yard is on the open list for anyone to find, and a private yard is off it, with its chat for members only. Its owner also chooses who gets in — anyone with the link, only people an admin approves, or nobody new for now — and can reset the link. A post made in a yard stays in that yard: anyone who opens a public yard can read it, and only members can read a private one’s. See Run your yard. ### Who can see my posts? When you post, you choose where it goes. The whole Yard can be seen by anyone on CommonYard. A post in one of your yards stays in that yard, and it can’t be moved to another yard later. In a public yard anyone who opens the yard can read it; in a private yard only its members can. ### How long does a poll stay open? Whoever makes the poll chooses: a day, three days, a week or no end. The card says when it closes, and a closed poll takes no more votes and shows its result. See Make a poll. ### Is my petition signature public? No. Your signature is private. The petition shows how many people signed and how the sides split — never who signed, or which side you chose. ### Why do I press and hold to sign a petition? So nobody’s name is ever added by an accidental tap. You choose your side first, then press and hold Hold to sign until it fills. Let go early and nothing is signed. See Sign a petition. ### What is a swipey? A run of pictures with one question, judged one at a time: swipe left or right. The post says what left and right mean, and at the end you see how your picks compare with everyone else’s. Post two or more pictures and your post becomes one. ### What games can I play? On your own: Penalty Flick, Hot Potato, Trivia, Rush, Scramble, Case 500, Guess the Number against the house and more, each with a hall of fame. With other people: hosted rounds you can join or start, Squad Trivia for yards, Troll War, Guess the Number and Sasabonsam. See Play games on CommonYard. ### What is Troll War? A battle of comebacks. Two corners — one against one, or teams — post their best lines, and the crowd’s reactions are the score. When the clock runs out, the side with more reactions wins. Fighters can’t react in the arena; only the crowd can. See Play Troll War. ### What are points for? Points are credits for taking part — a post, a vote, a signature, a finished game. They are not cash. This week’s points climb your yard’s ladder, which starts over every Monday. See Points, streaks and your figures. ### Can I practise for my exams on CommonYard? In a school yard, yes. Every school yard has Practice: past and practice questions by level, course and topic, timed or untimed, 5 to 50 at a time. There are past questions for University of Ghana courses such as UGRC 110, UGRC 150 and UGBS 104. ### Can I change or delete my post? Open the post’s three-dot (•••) menu, or tap YOU and then What you made, where everything you posted and every game you made is in one list. Edit changes the words (and, for a poll, when it closes); Delete or Take it down removes it. A poll’s choices, the pictures and the yard a post is in can’t be changed. See What you made. ### Can I post anonymously? Yes, as an opinion. On the post screen choose Weigh in, pick a form — a confession, a hot take, a question — and switch on Post anonymously. Other people see Anonymous and a mask instead of your name and photo. You still see it’s yours and still hear about replies, and it can still be reported like any other post. See Post anonymously. ### What is a troll post? A roast with rules. Its host puts themselves — or a school, a team, a business or an event everybody knows — up for trolling, and sets what’s off limits, how hot it is, how many shots each person gets and how long it’s open. People take their shots and laugh 😂 at the ones that land; the funniest is crowned when it closes. Hate, threats, anything sexual, private details, made-up claims about real people and anything about children are always off limits. See Start a troll. ### What is a sub yard? A smaller yard inside a yard — a hall in a university, a class in a school, the choir in a church — with its own posts, chat and admins. A yard’s owner and admins make them, and members join them from the yard’s page. See Sub yards. ### Do games need a host to start? No. Every game made on CommonYard starts at its time and runs itself to the end. Its maker can take the controls in What you made and hand them back. A member’s game for a yard goes up once one of the yard’s admins allows it. See Make a game. ### Where do the posts I hide go? They’re kept under Settings → Help & legal → Hidden posts, where Show again brings any of them back. Nobody is told you hid something. See Find the posts you hid. ### How do I change my username or photo? On your profile: tap your picture to change your photo, and the pencil beside your @username to pick a new name. CommonYard checks the name is free as you type. See Change your photo and username. ### How do I report something or block someone? Tap the three dots (•••) on the post or reply and choose Report or Block user. Only the people who run CommonYard see a report, and nobody is told who reported them or that they were blocked. See Stay safe on CommonYard. ### How do I delete my account? Signed in, tap YOU, then the gear for Settings, and tap Delete account at the bottom. CommonYard asks you first; it can’t be undone. See Log out, or delete your account. If you can’t sign in, the data deletion page says how to ask by email. ### How do I contact CommonYard? Email hello@commonyard.app. To report a post or a person, use Report in the app — it reaches the people who run CommonYard fastest. ### Where can I see what’s new? On the news page. There is also an Atom feed for news readers. ## CommonYard words ### CommonYard A free social app for taking part together: polls, sides, petitions, swipeys, games, yards and chat. It runs in any browser at [commonyard.app](https://commonyard.app/). Sometimes written Common Yard. ### The Yard The whole of CommonYard — and the home list of posts people take part in, under the **HOME** door. A post shared with the whole Yard can be seen by anyone on CommonYard. ### Yard A community inside CommonYard (written with a small y): a school, a church or mosque, a family, a team, a group of friends. Each yard has its own posts, chat, events and the people who run it. See [Find and join a yard](/guides/find-and-join-a-yard/). ### School yard A yard for a school. It comes with Practice, for revising school work. ### Faith yard A yard for a church, a mosque or any faith group. It comes with the devotional (a word for the day), the prayer wall (the yard's prayer requests, and a way to ask) and this week (service and meeting times). ### General yard A yard for anything else — friends, a team, a neighbourhood, a family. Just the yard and its chat. ### Open yard A public yard: anyone can find it under **Find a yard** and look inside before joining. Its owner decides who gets in: anyone with the link, people an admin approves, or nobody new for now. ### The bar The row at the bottom of the app: **HOME** (the Yard, or the yard you are in), **CHAT** (your chats), **GAMES** (play) and **YOU** (your profile), with a round **+** beside it for making a post. Inside a yard the bar adds **PRACTICE** in a school yard or **FAITH** in a faith yard. ### Your yards The yards you're in, together on the sky at the top of HOME: the one you're reading in the middle, with a ring. Tap another to bring it to the middle, and the posts below follow. **CommonYard**, the whole Yard, is one of them. **Find a yard** stands beside them. ### Post Pictures, a video or just words, shared with the whole Yard or with one of your yards. A post can ask people to do one thing: vote in a poll, take a side, talk it through, swipe your pictures, sign a petition or play a game. See [Make a post](/guides/make-a-post/). ### Poll A question with two to four choices, in words, pictures or both. The choices fill in like a bar chart as people vote, and the card says when the poll closes — in a day, three days, a week, or never. ### Opinion A post people take sides on, in one of seven forms — a hot take, a confession, a question, pick a side, a prediction, story time or a debate — each with three sides worded to fit, like **Agree**, **Not sure** and **Disagree**. It can be posted anonymously. See [Weigh in](/guides/weigh-in/) and [Take a side](/guides/take-a-side/). ### Petition A post asking someone to act. People choose a side and then press and hold to sign. Signatures are private: the petition shows how many signed and how the sides split, never who. ### Hold to sign How a petition is signed on CommonYard: choose your side, then press and hold **Hold to sign** until it fills. Letting go early signs nothing, so a name is never added by an accidental tap. ### Swipey A run of pictures with one question, judged one at a time — swipe left or right. The post says what left and right mean. A post with two or more pictures becomes a swipey. ### Notice A message at the top of a yard, set by the people who run it, for everyone in the yard to see. ### Announce to the yard Sends one post to every member of a yard. The people who run a yard can do it once a day. ### Owner, admin and mod The people who run a yard. The owner made it (or was handed it); admins and mods help run it, and can take down posts that don't belong there. ### Your people Your friends on CommonYard: whoever came in through a link you shared, or whose link you took. They are listed on your profile. See [Bring your friends in](/guides/bring-your-friends/). ### Rounds, solo and teams The doors of the **GAMES** page: **PLAY ALONE** for solo games and their halls of fame; **ROUNDS** to play hosted rounds with other people, live or later; **TEAMS** for Troll War, Sasabonsam, yard games and games with friends; and **HALL OF FAME** for every board in one place. ### Hall of fame Each game's board of champions and best scores. The **HALL OF FAME** door on the games page holds them all. ### Penalty Flick A solo game: flick the ball past a keeper who walks from post to post and gets faster the longer you play. A save or a miss costs one of your three lives. You play for a country — about seventy to choose from, Ghana first. ### Hot Potato A solo game: pass the potato around a ring of game characters before it burns you. It gets hotter every round. ### Troll War A battle of comebacks between two corners — one against one, or teams. The crowd's reactions are the score, and the side with more when the clock runs out wins. See [Play Troll War](/guides/play-troll-war/). ### Squad Trivia A trivia game for yards, under **TEAMS → Yard games**. ### Practice A school yard's bank of past and practice questions to revise with, by level, course and topic, timed or untimed, 5 to 50 at a time. See [past questions for University of Ghana courses](/practice/). ### Points Credits for taking part: a post earns 20, finishing a game 15, joining a yard 10, signing a petition 8, voting 5, answering a question 5, a reply 4 and a reaction 1. Points are not cash. ### Streak The number of days in a row you have done something on CommonYard. ### Freeze Covers one missed day so your streak doesn't break. Every seventh day in a row banks one, and you can hold two. ### Ladder A yard's weekly ranking by this week's points. It starts over every Monday. ### Level How the Yard sees you, moved up by everything you do — a post most, a reaction least. It is never a score and never cash. ### Impact and contribution Two figures on your profile. Impact is what other people did with the things you made; contribution is what you did with things other people made. Both start again on the 1st of every month. ### RateYourSociety Ghana's public-opinion platform, started in June 2023 by the same founder. It lives inside CommonYard and shares its accounts. Often shortened to RYS. ### Ghana’s Mood RateYourSociety's own page, at [rateyoursociety.com](https://rateyoursociety.com/): how Ghana feels, in live reactions. ### Weigh in The choice on the post screen for an opinion. Pick one of seven forms — Hot Take, Confession, Question, Pick a Side, Prediction, Story Time or Debate — and the three sides people choose from are worded to fit. See [Weigh in](/guides/weigh-in/). ### Anonymous An opinion posted without a name: it shows a mask and **Anonymous** instead of a name and photo. Only opinions can be posted this way. See [Post anonymously](/guides/post-anonymously/). ### Troll A post that puts its host — or a school, a team, a business, an event — up for a friendly roast, on rules the host sets: what's off limits, the heat (Mild, Hot or Shito), the shots each and how long it's open. See [Start a troll](/guides/start-a-troll/). ### Shot A reply on a troll post. The crowd laughs 😂 at the shots that land, and the one with the most laughs when it closes is crowned. The host can stamp a favourite (**GOT ME** or **HOST'S PICK**), clap back, or give a shot a **RED CARD**. See [Take a shot at a troll](/guides/take-a-shot/). ### Series Posts in parts — part 1, part 2, part 3 — kept together on a page of their own. Followers can be reminded a day and an hour before the next part. See [Post a series, and follow one](/guides/post-a-series/). ### What you made The page, under **YOU**, that holds everything you posted and every game you made, each with **Edit** and **Delete**, and the controls for your games. It replaced Your studio. See [What you made](/guides/what-you-made/). ### Sub yard A smaller yard inside a yard — a hall, a class, the choir — with its own posts, chat and admins. Its members are all members of the yard it's in. See [Sub yards](/guides/sub-yards/). ### Study materials The shelf under **PRACTICE** in a school yard: slides, notes and past papers the yard's admins upload for members to download. See [Share and download study materials](/guides/study-materials/). ### Sasabonsam A game for groups: everybody hides in the yard, and every round Sasabonsam searches one place. The last one hiding sees the sunrise. See [Play Sasabonsam](/guides/play-sasabonsam/). ### Clips The videos on CommonYard, played one after another, full screen. Press and hold a clip for its menu, or hold an edge to play at 2×. See [Watch clips](/guides/watch-clips/). ### Hidden posts The page, under **Settings → Help & legal**, that keeps every post you hid, with **Show again** beside each. See [Find the posts you hid](/guides/hidden-posts/). --- # Part 1 — About CommonYard # What is CommonYard? > CommonYard is a free social app where people vote in polls, take sides, sign petitions, play games and run yards for their school, faith group or friends. Here is how it works. Updated: 2026-10-10 URL: https://commonyard.app/what-is-commonyard/ **CommonYard is a free social app where people do things together: vote in polls, take sides, sign petitions, swipe through pictures, play games and chat — in yards, communities for a school, a church or mosque, a group of friends, or anyone.** It runs in any phone or computer browser at [commonyard.app](https://commonyard.app/), with nothing to download. Its line is “Find your people. Play, talk, and take part.” The name is sometimes written Common Yard. It was created by [Ronald Dumeloo](/founder/ronald-dumeloo/), and it is also the home of RateYourSociety, Ghana’s public-opinion platform. ## What people do there - **Vote in polls** with two to four choices, in words or pictures. The choices fill in like a bar chart, and the card says when the poll closes. See [Polls](/features/polls/). - **Take a side** on an opinion — a hot take, a confession, a prediction or a debate — and see how everyone split. Opinions can be posted anonymously. - **Sign petitions** by choosing a side and pressing and holding until the button fills. Signatures are private. See [Petitions](/features/petitions/). - **Swipe through a swipey**, a run of pictures you judge one at a time, left or right. - **Play games** on your own — Penalty Flick, Hot Potato, trivia and more — or with other people in live rounds and Troll War. See [Games](/features/games/). - **Post** pictures, a video or just words, and **react and reply** to what others post. - **Chat** with the people in your yards: words, photos, videos and voice notes. Every one of these happens right on the card in front of you, in a tap or two. ## Yards: where your people are A yard is a community inside CommonYard. Anyone can make one, for a school, a faith group, a family, a team or a neighbourhood. A **school yard** comes with Practice for revising; a **faith yard** comes with a devotional, a prayer wall and the week’s service times; a **general yard** is just the yard and its chat. The people who run a yard choose who gets in, post a notice, announce things, set up events with reminders, and keep it kind. A post made in a yard stays in that yard: anyone can look inside a public yard, and a private yard is for its members. See [Yards](/features/yards/). ## How it is different - **Taking part comes first.** A post can ask for one small thing — a vote, a side, a signature, a swipe — and you do it without leaving the card. - **You see where everyone landed.** Poll results, how the sides split, how many signed: the result is there the moment you take part. - **Your people, not just a crowd.** Yards keep a school, a church or a group of friends together, with their own posts, chat and events. - **Private where it matters.** Petition signatures are never shown, and a private yard's posts are for its members alone. - **Taking part is counted.** Points, streaks and a weekly ladder in every yard. Points are credits for taking part, not cash. ## The app at a glance A bar at the bottom of the screen has four doors — **HOME** to have your say, **CHAT** to talk, **GAMES** to play, and **YOU** for your profile — and a round **+** beside it for making a post. Your yards are the round tiles at the top of HOME. Search and your notifications are at the top right. ## Is it free, and is it safe? It is free to join and to use. You can report a post or a person, block someone, hide a post from its three-dot menu, mute a yard from its page, and the people who run each yard can take posts down. See [Stay safe on CommonYard](/guides/stay-safe/). ## CommonYard and RateYourSociety RateYourSociety (RYS) started in June 2023 as a place for Ghanaians to rate society, share opinions and take a public stand. Since September 2026 it lives inside CommonYard: one account works for both, and RYS keeps its own page, Ghana’s Mood, at [rateyoursociety.com](https://rateyoursociety.com/). RateYourSociety is not an old name for CommonYard; it is its own thing, living in CommonYard. ## Key facts - **What it is:** A free social app for taking part together: polls, sides, petitions, swipeys, games, yards and chat - **Creator and founder:** [Ronald Dumeloo](https://commonyard.app/founder/ronald-dumeloo/) - **Price:** Free to join and to use - **Where it runs:** [commonyard.app](https://commonyard.app/), in any phone or computer browser — nothing to download - **Joining:** With Google, Apple or a phone number - **Also home to:** RateYourSociety, Ghana’s public-opinion platform (since 2023) — its Ghana’s Mood page is at [rateyoursociety.com](https://rateyoursociety.com/) - **Contact:** [hello@commonyard.app](mailto:hello@commonyard.app) ## Try it Open [commonyard.app](https://commonyard.app/) and look around — you can read the Yard before you have an account. A post can ask for one small act — a vote, a side, a signature, a swipe — done right on the card, with the result shown straight away. People gather in yards: communities for a school, a church or mosque, a family or friends, each with its own posts, chat and events. People vote with one tap and watch the result fill in. Free. Updated: 2026-09-29 URL: https://commonyard.app/features/polls/ A poll on CommonYard asks one question with two to four choices. People vote with one tap, right on the card, and the choices fill in like a bar chart to show how everyone has voted so far. ## What a CommonYard poll does - **Words, pictures or both.** Each choice can be words, a picture, or a mix. On a picture poll, people tap the picture they pick. - **It closes when you say.** Choose a day, three days, a week or no end — a week is picked for you. The card tells voters when it closes, “closes in 3 days” for example, and a closed poll takes no more votes and shows its result. - **The result, straight away.** The card stamps **VOTED** once a vote is saved, and the voter sees where everyone landed. Before anyone votes, it says “Nobody has voted yet”. - **A picture or a clip on the question.** Start from **Pictures** or **A video** and the poll carries it. - **For everyone, or just your yard.** Post it to the whole Yard, where anyone on CommonYard can vote, or to one of your yards, where it stays: anyone who opens a public yard can read it, and its members vote. - **Close it early, or give it longer.** From the poll’s ⋯ menu, **Edit post** lets you close it now or change when it closes. ## Ideas for a poll - Where the class should go on its end-of-year trip. - Which date suits the family reunion. - Which jollof wins, with a picture on each choice. - Who was the man of the match on Saturday. ## Make one in a minute 1. Tap the round **+** at the bottom of the screen. 2. Write your question. Add a picture or a video to the poll if you like. 3. Under **ASK PEOPLE TO**, tap **Vote**. 4. Add two to four choices — words, pictures, or both. 5. Under **Closes**, pick 1 day, 3 days, 1 week or never. 6. Check where it goes — the whole Yard, or one or more of your yards — and tap **Post**. The full how-to is [Make a poll](/guides/make-a-poll/); for voters, it’s [Vote in a poll](/guides/vote-in-a-poll/). ## Good to know - A poll’s choices can’t be changed once it is out, so check them before you post. - Someone who votes before joining has their pick held as “not counted yet”; it counts as soon as they join. - Voting earns 5 points, and a post earns 20. Points are credits for taking part, not cash. --- # Petitions on CommonYard > Start a petition that names who should act. People choose a side, then press and hold to sign — and nobody can see who signed. Free. Updated: 2026-10-05 URL: https://commonyard.app/features/petitions/ A petition on CommonYard asks someone to act — a person, an office, a school, a company — and lets people sign it right where they read it. ## What a CommonYard petition does - **Signatures are private.** Everyone can see how many people signed and how the sides split. Nobody can see who signed, or which side any one person chose. - **Press and hold to sign.** Signers choose a side — **Agree** or **Disagree** — then hold the **SIGN HERE** bar until it fills. Let go early and nothing is signed, so a name is never added by an accidental tap. - **Every side counts.** Disagreeing is a signature too; it counts on the disagree side. - **Never counted twice.** Someone who changes their mind signs again on the other side, and their signature moves across. - **It names who should act.** When you start one, you say who it is asking. A petition with nobody to answer it never gets answered. - **For everyone, or just your yard.** Post it to the whole Yard, or to one of your yards, where it stays: anyone who opens a public yard can read it, and its members sign. ## Start a petition 1. Tap the round **+** at the bottom of the screen. 2. Write what should change. Add a picture if it helps. 3. Under **ASK PEOPLE TO**, tap **Sign**. 4. Say who has to act, and pick how many names you are aiming for. 5. Check where it goes and tap **Post**. The full how-tos are [Start a petition](/guides/start-a-petition/) and [Sign a petition](/guides/sign-a-petition/). ## Good to know - The people who run CommonYard can look at a signature only when they need to act on a report — the same as anything else that gets reported. - Signing earns 8 points. Points are credits for taking part, not cash. - Want a quick read of the room instead? Post an opinion and let people [take a side](/guides/take-a-side/). --- # Games on CommonYard > Play on your own for a hall of fame, join live rounds with other people, or take on another yard in Troll War. Free, in your phone’s browser. Updated: 2026-10-05 URL: https://commonyard.app/features/games/ Tap **GAMES** at the bottom of CommonYard. The games page has four doors: **PLAY ALONE**, **ROUNDS** to play with other people, **TEAMS** for yards and friends, and the **HALL OF FAME**. Everything runs in your browser — nothing to download. ## Play on your own Games you can play any time, alone, under **PLAY ALONE** — among them **Penalty Flick**, **Hot Potato**, **Trivia**, **Rush**, **Scramble**, **Case 500** and **Guess the Number** against the house. Your best score goes into each game’s hall of fame. - **Penalty Flick** — flick the ball past a keeper who walks from post to post and gets faster the longer you play. A save or a miss costs one of your three lives. Play for your country: about seventy to choose from, Ghana first. - **Hot Potato** — pass the potato around a ring of game characters before it burns you. Every round it gets hotter and you can hold it for less time. ## Play with other people Under **ROUNDS** are hosted rounds: the ones on now, the ones coming up, and what’s already been played. **Start a game** sets up a round of your own, or calls a friend out. Live games also show up on HOME, so you can jump in from there. ## Make your own Anyone can make a game — a quiz, a timed rush, a word scramble, a survival room, Food Poison, Sasabonsam. Set its time and share the link: it starts at that time and runs itself to the end, no host needed. Its maker can take the controls whenever they like. See [Make a game](/guides/make-a-game/). ## Troll War A battle of comebacks. Two corners — one against one, or teams — post their best lines in the arena: text, photos, videos or voice notes. The crowd decides: every reaction on a comeback is a point for its corner, and the side with more reactions when the clock runs out wins. Fighters can’t react in the arena; only the crowd can. Challenge a friend by their username, or take your whole yard into a Troll War against another yard. See [Play Troll War](/guides/play-troll-war/). ## Guess the Number Each of you locks in a secret number, then you take turns calling the other’s — and every call comes back “higher” or “lower”. Play a friend, another yard, or the house. See [Play Guess the Number](/guides/guess-the-number/). ## Yard games Under **TEAMS**: **Squad Trivia**, Troll War between yards and with friends, Guess the Number, and **Sasabonsam** — everybody hides in the yard, each round it searches one place, and the last one hiding wins. See [Play Sasabonsam](/guides/play-sasabonsam/). Inside a yard, **GAMES** is that yard's own page: its games on now and coming up, its weekly leaderboard, its challenges against other yards, and what it has already played. See [Your yard's games and ladder](/guides/your-yards-games/). ## Good to know - Finishing a game earns 15 points, and a big game win is told to you straight away. - Points are credits for taking part, not cash. - The full how-to is [Play games on CommonYard](/guides/play-games/). --- # Yards: a home for your people > Make a yard for your school, church, mosque, family or friends. Choose who gets in, post a notice, set up events with reminders, chat, and keep it kind. Free. Updated: 2026-10-09 URL: https://commonyard.app/features/yards/ A yard is a community inside CommonYard — for a school, a church or mosque, a family, a team, a neighbourhood or a group of friends. It has its own posts, its own chat room, its own events and the people who run it. Anyone can make one. ## Three kinds of yard - **School** — adds Practice, a bank of questions to revise with, and a shelf of study materials from the yard's admins. See [CommonYard for schools](/for/schools/). - **Faith** — adds the devotional, the prayer wall and the week’s service and meeting times. See [CommonYard for faith groups](/for/faith-groups/). - **General** — just the yard and its chat. ## What a yard gives you - **Posts that stay in the yard.** A post made in a yard stays there: polls, opinions, petitions, swipeys, pictures and videos. Anyone can look inside a public yard before joining; a private yard's posts are for its members. - **A chat room.** Words, photos, videos and voice notes, under **CHAT** on the bar inside the yard. - **Events with reminders.** Add what, where and when; members say they’re coming and get a reminder an hour before. - **A voice for the people who run it.** A notice at the top of the yard, and **Announce to the yard** to send one post to every member, once a day. - **Games of its own.** Inside a yard, **GAMES** is the yard's own page: its games on now and coming up, and members' games that its admins allow. See [Your yard's games and ladder](/guides/your-yards-games/). - **A weekly ladder.** This week’s points climb the yard’s ladder, which starts over every Monday. - **Sub yards.** A big yard can hold smaller ones — a hall, a class, the choir — each with its own chat and admins. See [Sub yards](/guides/sub-yards/). - **A link that invites.** Share your yard’s link and whoever takes it lands in your yard, ready to join. It shows a proper preview on WhatsApp and elsewhere. ## You choose who gets in A yard is **public** — on the open list, where anyone can find it and read its posts and chat — or **private**, off the list with its posts and chat for members only. It can take **anyone with the link**, need **admin approval** — people ask, and an owner or admin lets them in — or take **nobody new for now**, and its link can be reset at any time. You can make people admins or mods, and take someone out of the yard. ## Keeping it kind Owners, admins and mods can take down a post from the yard, and put it back if it was taken down by mistake. Members can report, block, hide a post or mute the yard. See [Stay safe on CommonYard](/guides/stay-safe/). ## Make a yard 1. On HOME, tap **Find a yard** beside your yards, then **Can't find yours?** at the bottom of that page. 2. Under **STARTING SHAPE**, pick **SCHOOL**, **FAITH** or **GENERAL**. 3. Give it a name, say what brings everyone together, and choose **Public** or **Private**. 4. Tap **Create a yard**, then share its link with your people. For its first week, your yard shows a card with three things to get it going: ask the first question, share the link, and bring three people. Free. Updated: 2026-10-09 URL: https://commonyard.app/for/schools/ A school yard is a yard made for a school — a class, a hall, a department, a club or the whole school. Everyone in it gets the yard’s own posts, polls, chat and events, and one thing only school yards have: **Practice**, with its shelf of study materials. ## Practice: revise with questions Every school yard comes with Practice, a bank of past and practice questions to revise with. - Choose your level, the course and the topic. - Go timed or untimed, and pick how many questions — anything from 5 to 50. - Answer, then see how you did. - Inside a school yard, **PRACTICE** is a door on the bar, so revision is one tap away. ## Study materials: the class shelf Under **PRACTICE**, **Study materials** is the yard's shelf of files: lecture slides, notes and past papers. The yard's owner and admins upload them — PDF, PowerPoint, Word, Excel or text, up to 50 MB each, grouped by course — and every member can download them. See [Share and download study materials](/guides/study-materials/). There are [past questions for University of Ghana (Legon) courses](/practice/) — UGRC 110 Academic Writing I, UGRC 150 Critical Thinking and Practical Reasoning, UGRC 220 Introduction to African Studies, UGBS 104 Principles of Management and more. ## What else a school yard is good for - **Class decisions** — a poll for the trip, the date, the class T-shirt, with a closing time so it actually ends. - **Study groups and hall weeks** — events with a place and a time, and a reminder an hour before for everyone coming. - **The notice** — the week’s one thing everyone must know, at the top of the yard. - **Chat** — words, photos, videos and voice notes, under **CHAT** on the bar inside the yard. - **Games** — Squad Trivia and Troll War between yards, quiz nights members make for the yard, and a weekly points ladder. - **Sub yards** — one for each class, hall or club inside the school's yard, with its own chat and admins. See [Sub yards](/guides/sub-yards/). ## Who gets in Whoever makes the yard runs it and can add admins and mods. Let in anyone with the link, only the people an admin approves, or nobody new for now. A post made in the yard stays in the yard. ## Make your school’s yard 1. On HOME, tap **Find a yard** beside your yards, then **Can't find yours?** at the bottom of that page. 2. Under **STARTING SHAPE**, pick **SCHOOL**. 3. Name it, say what brings everyone together, and choose **Public** or **Private**. 4. Tap **Create a yard**, then share the link in your class group. Change it any time. - **Announce to the yard** sends one post to every member, once a day. - **Events** with what, where and when. Members say they’re coming, and they get a reminder an hour before it starts. - **Admins and mods** to share the work, and the tools to take down a post that doesn’t belong. ## For everyone in the yard - A chat room with words, photos, videos and voice notes. - Polls with a closing time — for a date, a choice of songs, a vote on the outing. - Posts that stay in the yard: a post made in a yard stays there. Read the rules, take your shot, and laugh at the ones that land — the funniest shot is crowned when it closes. Section: Taking part · Updated: 2026-10-05 URL: https://commonyard.app/guides/take-a-shot/ A troll post puts someone — or something everybody knows — up for a friendly roast. Its host set the rules: what's off limits, how hot it is, and how many shots each person gets. ![A troll post about a school: the rules on chips, the top shot so far with its laughs, and Take your shot](https://commonyard.app/guides/img/troll-card.webp "The rules, the top shot, and your turn.") ## Steps 1. Read the card. Its top says who's being trolled and how hot it is — **Troll Hilltop College · 🌶️🌶️ Hot**, for example — and the rules sit under the words. Tap **All the rules** to read them in full. 2. Tap **Take your shot**. 3. Write your shot and send it. If it looks like it touches something off limits, or reads angry rather than funny, the box warns you — **Make it funny, not mean**. You can still change it. 4. Read the other shots, and laugh 😂 at the ones that land. ## How it's won Every 😂 on a shot counts. When the troll closes, the shot with the most laughs is crowned. The card shows the **TOP SHOT** so far. ## Good to know - You get one shot, or three — the card says which. Make it count. - You can't answer someone else's shot. Only the host can **clap back**. - The host can give a **RED CARD** to a shot that broke the rules, which takes it out of the roast. - If a shot is cruel rather than funny, report it from its menu. See [Stay safe on CommonYard](/guides/stay-safe/). - Want to start one? See [Start a troll](/guides/start-a-troll/). --- # Watch clips > Tap a video to watch it full screen, then swipe up for the next. Section: Taking part · Updated: 2026-10-05 URL: https://commonyard.app/guides/watch-clips/ Videos on CommonYard play in a loop of clips, one after another, full screen. ## Steps 1. Tap a video on any post. It opens full screen. 2. Swipe up for the next clip, or down for the one before. 3. Tap the clip to pause it, and tap again to play. 4. Drag along the bar at the bottom to jump forward or back. ## On every clip - **Double-tap** to react. - The buttons down the side: **React**, **Comments**, **Share**, **Save**, and the three dots for the rest. - Tap the yard's name or the person's name to go to them. - Long words? Tap **Show more**. ## Press and hold for more Press and hold in the middle of a clip. It pauses, and a menu opens: - **Save**, **Share** and **Copy link**. - **Full screen** — just the clip, with nothing over it. Tap the clip to bring the words and buttons back. - **Auto scroll** — the next clip starts when this one ends. - **Speed** — 0.5×, 1×, 1.5× or 2×. - **Not interested** — hides this post from you. - **More options** — report, block, and the rest. Tap away from the menu to close it, and the clip plays on. ## Fast forward Press and hold near the left or right edge of a clip instead, and it plays at **2×** for as long as you hold. ## Good to know - At the end of the clips, tap **Back to the Yard**. New clips land in the Yard as they're posted. - A post you marked **Not interested** is kept under Hidden posts, where you can bring it back. See [Find the posts you hid](/guides/hidden-posts/). --- # Make a post > Tap +, write what you want to say, add a picture or a video if you like, ask people to do something if you want, and post. Section: Posting · Updated: 2026-10-07 URL: https://commonyard.app/guides/make-a-post/ Everything you post starts on one page: your words first, pictures or a video if you want them, and — only if you want it — something for people to do. ![The post screen: close and What you made at the top; your name with to the whole Yard under it; Say it to the yard. as the place to write; Part of a series; and at the bottom the picture and video buttons, Ask people to…, and Post to the whole Yard](https://commonyard.app/guides/img/composer.webp "One page: write, add, ask, post.") ## Steps 1. Tap the round **+** at the bottom of the screen, beside the bar. 2. Write what you want to say where it says **Say it to the yard.** A line is enough. 3. To add a picture or a video, tap the picture or video button. An editor opens where you can crop, add a filter, words, stickers or a drawing. Tap **Done — use it** when you're happy. A picture you added has an edit button if you want to change it again. 4. If you want people to do something, tap **Ask people to…** and pick one: **Vote**, **Weigh in**, **Sign**, **Reply**, **Swipe** or **Troll**. For a game, tap **Or start a game for the yard** under them. Most posts don't need any of this. 5. Check where it goes, under your name — *to the whole Yard*, for example. Tap it to change, and tick every place it should go. See [Post to several yards at once](/guides/post-to-several-yards/). 6. Tap the big button at the bottom. It says where your post goes: **Post to the whole Yard**, or **Post to** and your yard's name. The screen closes as soon as you post; your post goes up on its own while you carry on. ## What each choice does - **Vote** — a poll. See [Make a poll](/guides/make-a-poll/). - **Weigh in** — a hot take, a confession, a question, a prediction and more, that people take sides on — under your name, or anonymously. See [Weigh in](/guides/weigh-in/). - **Swipe** — a swipey, where people judge each picture left or right. See [Swipe through a swipey](/guides/swipe-a-swipey/). - **Sign** — a petition. See [Start a petition](/guides/start-a-petition/). - **Reply** — a discussion: everyone answers in one thread. - **Troll** — put yourself, or a school, a team or a business everybody knows, up for a friendly roast. See [Start a troll](/guides/start-a-troll/). - **Or start a game for the yard** — a game with a clock. See [Make a game](/guides/make-a-game/). ## Two or more pictures A post shows one picture. If you add more, CommonYard asks: **KEEP ONE** keeps the first, and **SWIPE THEM** turns the post into a swipey. ## Part of a series Posting something in parts — a story, a weekly review, a diary? Under **PART OF A SERIES**, add the post to one of your series, or start one. See [Post a series](/guides/post-a-series/). ## Good to know - A post earns 20 points. - Your draft saves itself as you write. - If a post can't go out — no connection, for example — it is kept as a draft, and HOME offers it back to you. - A post made in a yard stays in that yard. It can't be moved later. - The square button beside the close button opens **What you made**, where you can edit or delete anything you posted. See [What you made](/guides/what-you-made/). --- # Make a poll > Ask a question with two to four choices, in words or pictures, and choose when the poll closes. Under **ASK PEOPLE TO**, tap **Vote**. A card for the choices opens. 4. Fill in two choices. Tap **Add a choice** for a third or a fourth. To give a choice a picture, tap the picture button beside it. 5. Under **Closes**, pick **1 day**, **3 days**, **1 week** or **Never**. A week is picked for you. 6. Check the line at the bottom — "Goes out as a poll · 2 choices · closes in a week" — and where it goes, at the top. 7. Tap **Post**. ![The post screen with a question written, Vote chosen, two choices filled in, the Closes choices, and the line "Goes out as a poll"](https://commonyard.app/guides/img/composer-poll.webp "The line at the bottom says exactly how the poll will go out.") ## After you post The poll goes up with its choices. As votes come in, the choices fill in to show the result, and the card says when it closes. ## Changing when it closes Tap the three dots (**•••**) on your poll and tap **Edit post**. Under **Move it to**, you can close it now, or move its end to 1 day, 3 days, 1 week or never. The choices stay as they are — people have already voted on them. ## Good to know - Check your choices before you post: once people vote, they can't be changed. - A poll can go to the whole Yard or to one of your yards — or to several at once. See [Post to several yards at once](/guides/post-to-several-yards/). --- # Weigh in — hot takes, confessions, predictions and more > Post something people take a side on, in one of seven forms — hot take, confession, question, pick a side, prediction, story time or debate — under your name or anonymously. Section: Posting · Updated: 2026-10-05 URL: https://commonyard.app/guides/weigh-in/ **Weigh in** is for anything people should take a side on. Tap the round **+** at the bottom of the screen. 2. Under **ASK PEOPLE TO**, tap **Weigh in**. 3. Pick its form. The box tells you what to write. 4. Write it. 5. Check the three sides. Leave them, or tap one and name it your own way. 6. To post without your name, switch on **Post anonymously**. See [Post anonymously](/guides/post-anonymously/). 7. Check the line at the bottom — "Goes out as a confession · Same / No judgement / Not me", for example — then tap **Post**. ## The seven forms - **Hot Take** — the take people will argue with. Sides: Agree · Not sure · Disagree. - **Confession** — what you want off your chest. Sides: Same · No judgement · Not me. - **Question** — a question for the yard. Sides: Yes · Maybe · No. - **Pick a Side** — the two sides people choose between. Sides: With it · On the fence · Against it. - **Prediction** — what you think will happen. Sides: Will happen · Not sure · Won't happen. - **Story Time** — the story. Sides: Believe it · Hmm · No way. - **Debate** — the motion. Sides: For · Undecided · Against. The card shows the form at the top, so people know what they're answering. ## Good to know - Change the form and the sides change with it — unless you renamed them, in which case your words stay. - Taking a side is one tap. See [Take a side](/guides/take-a-side/). - After you post, you can change the words, but not the sides: people have already picked them. --- # Post anonymously > Post an opinion — a confession, a hot take, a question — without your name. Other people see Anonymous and a mask; you still see it's yours, and still hear about replies. Section: Posting · Updated: 2026-10-05 URL: https://commonyard.app/guides/post-anonymously/ Some things are easier to say without your name on them. An opinion can go out anonymously: other people see **Anonymous** and a mask instead of your name and photo. ## Steps 1. Tap the round **+** at the bottom of the screen. 2. Under **ASK PEOPLE TO**, tap **Weigh in**, and pick a form — **Confession**, for example. 3. Write it. 4. Switch on **Post anonymously**. The switch says **Shown as Anonymous with a mask. Nobody sees it's you.** 5. Check the line at the bottom: it says "anonymous". Tap **Post**. ![The Post anonymously switch, turned on, under the sides of a confession](https://commonyard.app/guides/img/composer-anonymous.webp "Switch it on before you post.") ## What people see - The card shows a mask and **Anonymous** where your name and photo would be. There's no way to open your profile from it. - Replies, reactions and sides work as on any other post. ## What you see - Your own anonymous post says **You · anonymous**, so you know it's yours. - You still get notifications when people reply to it. - It's in **What you made** with your other posts, marked **Anonymous**, where you can edit or delete it. See [What you made](/guides/what-you-made/). ## Good to know - Only opinions — the posts you make with **Weigh in** — can go out anonymously. - Decide before you post: an anonymous post can't be given your name later, and a named one can't be made anonymous. - Anonymous isn't a way around the rules. An anonymous post can be reported like any other, and the people who run CommonYard can still act on it. Add a picture if it helps. 3. Under **ASK PEOPLE TO**, tap **Sign**. 4. In the **To** box, say who has to act — an office, a school, a company, an assembly. A petition with nobody to answer it never gets answered. 5. Under **Aim for**, pick how many names you want: **1k names**, **5k names** or **10k names**. 5k is picked for you. 6. Check the line at the bottom and where it goes, at the top, then tap **Post**. ![The post screen with Sign chosen: the ask written, "Who has to act" filled in, and the Aim for choices](https://commonyard.app/guides/img/composer-petition.webp "Say what should change and who has to act on it.") ## What signers see People pick **Agree** or **Disagree**, then press and hold to sign. Everyone can see how many signed and how the sides split. Nobody can see who signed. See [Sign a petition](/guides/sign-a-petition/). ## Good to know - After you post, you can still change the words, who has to act and the number you're aiming for, from **Edit post**. Section: Posting · Updated: 2026-10-05 URL: https://commonyard.app/guides/start-a-troll/ A troll is a roast with rules. You pick who or what gets trolled, set the rules, and the yard takes its shots. Tap the round **+** at the bottom of the screen. 2. Under **ASK PEOPLE TO**, tap **Troll**. 3. Under **Who gets trolled?**, pick **Me**, **A school**, **An event**, **A celebrity**, **A politician**, **A business**, **A team**, **A place** or **Something else** — and type its name. 4. Write what there is to troll: your outfit, your cooking, what the school is famous for, how the team played this week. 5. Tick the box to say you're responsible for the post. 6. Pick what's **Off limits**. Each target comes with the kind choices already on — no family jokes when it's you, nothing about a school's people or party politics when it's a school. 7. Add up to three rules of your own if you like — **Pidgin only**, **One line only**, **Rhymes only** — or type one. 8. Pick the **Heat**: **Mild** (light teasing), **Hot** (a proper roast) or **Shito** (extra pepper). Every heat is still friendly. 9. Pick the **Shots**: **One each** or **Three each**. 10. Pick how long it's **Open**: **1 hour**, **1 day** or **3 days**. 11. You don't take shots at your own post, but you can: - **Laugh** 😂 at the shots that land. - **Stamp** your favourite — **GOT ME** when it's about you, **HOST'S PICK** when it isn't. - **Clap back** once at any shot. - Give a **RED CARD** to a shot that broke your rules, and say which rule. It leaves the roast for everyone. - **CLOSE IT NOW** to end it early. When it closes, the shot with the most 😂 is crowned. ## The rules that are always on Whatever you pick, there's no hate, no threats, nothing sexual and no private details — and about anyone but yourself, nothing made up. Personal roasts are only for yourself or adult public figures: roast public work and actions, not private lives. Never name a private person, and never target children. ## Good to know - Taking part? For its first week, your yard shows you a card with three things to get it going: ask the first question, share the link, and bring three people. Put it away whenever you like. ## Next - Change who can join, reset the link, add an admin, post a notice or set up an event: see [Run your yard](/guides/run-your-yard/). - Split a big yard into smaller ones — a class, a hall, a choir: see [Sub yards](/guides/sub-yards/). --- # Run your yard > For owners and admins — Manage yard holds the link and who can join, members and admins, join requests, events, the pinned notice, the chat's rules, sub yards and what was taken down. Tap the gear to go straight to **Manage yard**. Or open the yard, tap its name at the top, and tap **Manage yard** on its page. ![The info page of a yard you run, with the Manage yard row near the top](https://commonyard.app/guides/img/yard-info-admin.webp "Manage yard is on the yard's page, for owners and admins.") Manage yard is split into parts, along the top: **Invite people**, **Link & privacy**, **Members & admins**, **Join requests**, **Events**, **Taken down**, **Chat**, **Yard settings** and **Sub yards**. ## Invite people, and the link - Share or copy the yard's link from **Invite people**. Whoever comes in through it counts as someone you brought. - **Reset the link** gives the yard a new link. Every link shared before stops letting anybody in; whoever is in stays in. On a public yard, resetting the link also makes the yard private — CommonYard asks first, with **Make it private and reset**. ## Link & privacy - **Public or private.** A public yard is on the open list, where anyone on CommonYard can find it and read its chat. A private yard is off the list; its chat, pictures and posts are for members. - **Who can come in.** **Anyone with the link**, **Admin approval** (people ask to join and an owner or admin approves them), or **Nobody new for now**. ## Members & admins Tap a member to **Make an admin**, **Make a mod**, **Make an ordinary member**, **Pause their messages**, or **Take them out of the yard**. An admin can change the yard and manage people; a mod can take people out, and nothing else. ## Join requests When your yard needs approval, the people waiting are under **Join requests**. Tap **Approve** or **Decline**. Admins get a notification when someone asks. ## Say something to the whole yard - **The pinned notice** — one short thing the yard should know. It sits at the top of the yard. Write it and tap **Pin it**; take it down whenever you like. It's under **Yard settings**. - **Announce a post** — open any post's three dots (**•••**) and tap **Announce to the yard** to tell every member about it. You can announce once a day. ## Events Under **Events**, tap **Add an event** and fill in **What**, **Where**, **Details** and the time, then **Add it**. The yard sees it at once and hears about it an hour before it starts. ## Games members make Members can make a game for the yard — a quiz night, a word scramble, Sasabonsam. It waits for an owner or admin before it goes up. The requests are on the yard's own **GAMES** page, under **Requests**: tap **Allow** and it goes up, or **Turn down**. See [Your yard's games and ladder](/guides/your-yards-games/). ## Keeping it kind - Owners, admins and mods see **Take down from the yard** in the menu on other people's posts. What came down is kept under **Taken down**, where you can **Put back** anything taken down by mistake. - Under **Chat**, choose who can talk: **Everyone in the yard**, or **Admins and mods only** for announcements. Reports about the chat are there too. ## Sub yards A sub yard is a smaller yard inside yours — a class, a hall, a department, the choir. Under **Sub yards**, tap **Make a sub yard**. See [Sub yards](/guides/sub-yards/). ## The yard itself Under **Yard settings** you can change the yard's name, **What this yard is for** and its picture, change what kind of yard it is, **Hand the yard to someone** else, or **Archive the yard**. ## In a school yard Owners and admins can put slides, notes and past papers on the yard's shelf for members to download. See [Share study materials](/guides/study-materials/). --- # Chat in your yard > Every yard has a chat room. Swipe it sideways, or tap a dot, to move between them. It folds into one thin line as you scroll down. ## Also in the chat - **Photos** lets you pick several photos and videos at once — up to 10. Each goes as its own message, and you can tap one to edit it first. - A video in the chat shows a still picture and its length. Tap it to play. - **Stickers** has your own **My stickers** too: import PNG or WebP pictures saved on your phone, including stickers from WhatsApp. - **Share content** puts a post from the Yard into the chat, where people can take part right there. - A CommonYard link to a game or a yard shows as a card, not a line of blue letters: a Guess the Number duel, a Ludo table, a night of Sasabonsam, a Troll War, a trivia **Beat my score**, a friend's call on a poll, or a yard's invitation. The card says who shared it and what it is, with one button to go in — like **Take a seat**, **Join the war** or **Join the yard**. - Type **@** and a name to mention someone; they get a notification. An owner or admin can write **@everyone** to reach the whole yard. - Press and hold a message for its menu: react, **Reply**, **Copy**, **Forward**, **Save**, **Report** and more. People who run the yard also see **Pin to the yard**. - **Forward** sends the message on to another of your chats. It arrives marked **Forwarded**. - When someone is writing, a line under the messages says so, like *Ama is typing*. - Under your newest message it says **Sent**, then **Seen by** and who has read it. Tap that line to see everyone who has seen it. - **Search this chat** finds what was said, with dates to narrow it down. ## Start a game Tap **+** and then **Start a game**. Every game is there, in three groups: - **On your own**: Trivia, Penalty Flick, Hot Potato, Rush, Last One Standing, Scramble, Case 500, Guess the Number, Fruit Catch and Ludo. Tap **Play** and it starts straight away. When you finish, you're back on the list to play another. - **With this chat**: a quiz, a round, a Troll War, a night of Sasabonsam or a Guess the Number duel. Tap **Make** and set it up, and its link goes into the chat for everyone here to join. It's your own game on CommonYard, so no admin needs to allow it. - **For the yard**: a game for everyone in the yard, on the yard's own page, including Squad Trivia and a night of Sasabonsam. If you're the yard's owner or an admin, tap **Host** and it goes up at once. If you're a member, tap **Make** and it's **sent to the yard's admins** first. It goes up when one of them allows it. For more on setting a game up, see [Make a game](/guides/make-a-game/). ## Good to know - **HOME** inside a yard takes you back to the top of that yard, not out of it. To go back to the whole Yard, tap **CommonYard** on the sky. - Messages from people you have blocked don't show in your chat. - Don't want people to see when you have read their messages? Turn off **Show when I have read** at the bottom of your chats. It works both ways: you won't see when they have read yours either. - The yard's owner or admins can mute the chat for announcements: the lock at the top of the chat, **Who can send messages**, then **Only admins and mods**. It is also under **Chat** in **Manage yard**. It needs two yards with at least three players each. - A night for your yard made by a member waits for one of the yard's admins to allow it. - The host can **Call it off** before the hunt begins. - Tap **Hear the story again** for the tale of Sasabonsam. --- # Your profile and interests > Tap YOU for your profile — your photo and username, your posts, yards and points, your streak and level, what you saved, your people, what you made, and the interests that steer what reaches you. Tap **Add an interest** and type it in your own words — a music style, a school, a food. 3. Tap an interest to change its words, or its **×** to remove it. Some interests are ones you typed. Others the Yard works out from what you post and answer. Changing one of those makes it yours; removing it stops the Yard from using it. ## Settings The gear at the top right opens **Settings**: **What you hear about**, your location, your photo and username, **Hidden posts**, blocked users, the theme and typeface, **Log out** and **Delete account**. Your new photo shows everywhere at once. Signing in again with Google or Apple doesn't put your old photo back. ## Change your username 1. Tap **YOU**. 2. Tap the pencil beside your **@username**. 3. Type the new one. As you type, CommonYard checks it: **Available**, or **Taken · try another**. 4. Tap **Save**. Section: Your account · Updated: 2026-10-08 URL: https://commonyard.app/guides/points-and-streaks/ Your profile shows how many **posts**, **yards** and **points** you have, then two tiles: your streak and your level. Tap **How points, streaks and levels work** under them for the same explanation in the app. ![The page that explains your figures: points and what each act earns, level, impact and contribution](https://commonyard.app/guides/img/figures-help.webp "The app explains every figure too.") ## Points Points are credits for taking part. They are not cash. Each act earns once: - Post — 20 - Finish a game — 15 - Join a yard — 10 - Sign a petition — 8 - Vote — 5 - Answer a question — 5 - Reply — 4 - React — 1 This week's points climb your yard's ladder. The ladder starts over every Monday. ## Streak Do one thing a day and your streak grows. The streak tile on your profile says how many days in a row, or what keeps it going today. Every seventh day in a row banks a **freeze**, which covers one missed day, so a single day off doesn't break your streak. On your profile, each freeze you have in hand shows as a small blue disc on the streak tile. ## Level Your level is how the Yard sees you — never a score, never cash. Every act moves it up: a post most, a reaction least. Leaving a yard or muting takes a little back, and a confirmed report against you puts it on hold. ## Impact and contribution - **Impact** is what other people did with the things you made: reacting, taking part, finishing, replying. Your own acts don't count, each person counts once on each thing, and a reply only counts after a day. - **Contribution** is what you did with things other people made. Only the first few of each kind a day count. Both start again on the 1st of every month. They are not points and buy nothing. They are no longer on your profile; **How points, streaks and levels work** still explains them. ## Hearing about your points Points are added up and sent as one summary — at most about once a week, in the evening, Accra time — instead of a message for every vote. A big game win is told straight away. --- # Bring your friends in > Share a yard, a post or a challenge. Whoever comes in through your link becomes one of Your people. Section: Your account · Updated: 2026-09-29 URL: https://commonyard.app/guides/bring-your-friends/ On CommonYard, a friend is someone who came in through your link — or whose link you took. ## Steps 1. Share a link from CommonYard: a yard's link, a post (tap the paper plane on it), a game challenge, or the challenge CommonYard offers after you vote in a poll or finish a swipey. 2. Your friend opens it and joins or takes part. 3. They appear under **Your people** on your profile, and you appear under theirs. ## What friends see When a friend takes part in something, you may see a line such as "Kofi voted" or "Kofi and Abena signed". It says that they took part — never what they chose. ## Good to know - A yard's link works as an invitation: whoever joins through it counts as someone you brought in. See [Make a yard](/guides/make-a-yard/). - You can challenge anyone on CommonYard to a game by their username — see [Play Troll War](/guides/play-troll-war/) and [Play Guess the Number](/guides/guess-the-number/). --- # Add your birthday > Tell CommonYard your birthday and the day itself brings a greeting on your home, a birthday card with confetti, and a note that morning. The petition shows how many people signed and how the sides split — never who signed, or which side you chose. ## Anonymous posts Opinions posted anonymously show a mask instead of a name. They can be reported like any other post, and the people who run CommonYard can still act on them. See [Post anonymously](/guides/post-anonymously/). ## Trolls are roasts, not fights A troll post has rules that are always on — no hate, no threats, nothing sexual, no private details, nothing made up about real people, and never children. Report a shot that breaks them. See [Take a shot at a troll](/guides/take-a-shot/). ## If someone is in danger Contact the police or emergency services first. Then report the post so the people who run CommonYard can act. Where **Leaderboard** was, **This week.** now says what the yard did together, like *12 people took part · 140 things done*. Under it, only you see your own week: how many things you did and the points they earned. Switch between **THIS WEEK** and **LAST WEEK** as before. Game winners still get their own boards. See [Your yard's games and ladder](/guides/your-yards-games/). ## Show me as here Rather not be seen? Tap **YOU**, then the gear for **Settings**. You won't see when others were last on either. ## Your pace Also in **Settings**, under **Your pace**: - **Streak reminders** — turn off the streak prompts on HOME and your profile on this phone. Your points and streak record stay. - **Games you didn't play** — turn off the HOME recaps of games where you held a seat but didn't play. ## Your own posts nag you less - A post of yours that nobody has answered yet no longer says *No votes yet* or *No reactions yet*. - A poll or ask of yours that is still open is mentioned once, for a while, as *Your poll is still open*, with **SEND IT** to share it with one person. After two days it is let be. ## Yard names are shorter A new yard's name, or a sub yard's, can be up to 20 characters. Then nobody sees when you have read their messages, and you don't see when they have read yours. ## Forward a message Press and hold a message and tap **Forward**, then choose the chat to send it to. It arrives marked **Forwarded**. ## For people who run a yard The lock at the top of the yard's chat is **Who can send messages**. One button on the card takes you in. See [Watch clips](/guides/watch-clips/). --- # Games now start on time, by themselves > Every game made on CommonYard now starts at its time and runs itself to the end — no host needed. Makers can still take the controls, and hand them back. Published: 2026-10-04 URL: https://commonyard.app/news/games-run-themselves/ A game used to wait for its host to press start. If the host was busy, everybody waited. Not any more. ## What changed - **Every game starts at its time.** A quiz night, a word scramble, a survival room — when the clock reaches its start, it starts. - **And runs itself to the end**, question by question and round by round. - **Too few players?** It waits a quarter of an hour for more, then calls itself off. ## You can still run it yourself In **What you made**, under **Games**, tap **Take control** on any of your games to run it by hand. **Hand back** puts it back on autopilot. See [Make a game](/guides/make-a-game/). ## Games made for a yard A member's game for a yard waits for one of the yard's owners or admins to allow it, on the yard's own **GAMES** page. An admin's goes up at once. See [Your yard's games and ladder](/guides/your-yards-games/). --- # Search finds more, and shows you pictures > Search now finds posts with any of your words, best matches first, and every result shows its picture — the photo, a swipey's first card, or a video's first frame. Published: 2026-10-03 URL: https://commonyard.app/news/search-finds-more/ Search used to need the exact words. Not any more. ## Any of your words A search now finds things with any of the words you typed. The ones with the most of your words come first. Small words like "the" are left out, and "dresses" finds "dress", "selling" finds "sell". ## Pictures on the results Every result shows what it looks like: a post's photo, a swipey's first card, or the first frame of a video, with a play mark. See [Search CommonYard](/guides/search-commonyard/). --- # Troll: a roast with rules > A new kind of post. Put yourself — or a school, a team, a business or an event everybody knows — up for a friendly roast, set the rules, and the funniest shot is crowned. Published: 2026-10-03 URL: https://commonyard.app/news/troll/ Some posts are asking for it. Now there's a proper way: **Troll**, on the post screen. ## You set the rules - **Who gets trolled** — you, or a school, an event, a celebrity, a politician, a business, a team, a place or something else. - **What's off limits** — kind choices are on from the start: no family jokes about you, nothing about a school's people or party politics. - **House rules** of your own — *Pidgin only*, *one line only*, *rhymes only*. - **The heat** — 🌶️ Mild, 🌶️🌶️ Hot or 🌶️🌶️🌶️ Shito. All of them friendly. - **Shots** — one each, or three — and how long it's **open**: an hour, a day or three days. ## The crowd decides People take their shots and laugh 😂 at the ones that land. When it closes, the shot with the most laughs is crowned. The host can stamp a favourite, clap back once at any shot, red-card one that broke the rules, or close it early. Some rules are always on, whatever the host picks: no hate, no threats, nothing sexual, no private details, nothing made up about real people, and never children. See [Start a troll](/guides/start-a-troll/) and [Take a shot at a troll](/guides/take-a-shot/). --- # Weigh in: seven ways to ask, and you can do it anonymously > Opinions now come in seven forms — hot take, confession, question, pick a side, prediction, story time and debate — each with its own sides. And you can post one anonymously. Published: 2026-10-03 URL: https://commonyard.app/news/weigh-in/ **Take a side** on the post screen is now **Weigh in**, and it does more. ## Seven forms Pick what you're posting, and the three sides people choose from are worded to fit: - **Hot Take** — Agree · Not sure · Disagree - **Confession** — Same · No judgement · Not me - **Question** — Yes · Maybe · No - **Pick a Side** — With it · On the fence · Against it - **Prediction** — Will happen · Not sure · Won't happen - **Story Time** — Believe it · Hmm · No way - **Debate** — For · Undecided · Against You can still rename the sides yourself, and now the names you give them are kept. ## Anonymously Switch on **Post anonymously** and the post goes out with a mask and the name **Anonymous** — no photo, no profile. You still see it's yours, still hear about replies, and can still edit or delete it. It can still be reported like any other post. See [Weigh in](/guides/weigh-in/) and [Post anonymously](/guides/post-anonymously/). --- # A calmer CommonYard > A new home with your yards on the sky, calmer cards where a poll's result grows as you vote, a plainer post screen, notifications in plain words, and What you made in place of Your studio. Published: 2026-10-02 URL: https://commonyard.app/news/a-calmer-commonyard/ CommonYard got a new look from top to bottom today. Everything works as before; it's easier to read. ## The home Your yards float on a sky that follows the hour and the weather, with the one you're reading biggest. Under them sit **Find a yard** and **New yard**, then what moved on your own posts, then the newest posts. When a game is live, a strip says so, with **Join**. See [Get started](/guides/get-started/). ## The cards Every kind of post has its own colour and a calmer card. Tap a poll's choice and the result grows in front of you. A petition shows a ring for how close it is to its goal, and you sign on a **SIGN HERE** bar. ## The post screen and the thread The post screen matches the home. Under a post's replies, **MORE POSTS** carries on with the next ones, so you can keep reading without going back. ## What you made **Your studio** is gone. **What you made** — under **YOU**, and behind the square button on the post screen — holds everything you've posted and every game you made, each with **Edit** and **Delete**. The **+** on every bar now opens the post screen. See [What you made](/guides/what-you-made/). ## Notifications, in plain words The notifications page and its settings were rewritten. **What you hear about** has one switch for each kind — replies, yards, games, points, news — and **Quiet at night**. See [Turn on notifications](/guides/turn-on-notifications/). ## GAMES The games page wears the same sky, with the hall of fame's leaders on it and the four doors underneath. See [Play games on CommonYard](/guides/play-games/). --- # Find what you hid, and change your name in one tap > Every post you hide is now kept on a Hidden posts page, where you can bring it back. And your profile lets you change your photo and username right where they are. Published: 2026-10-01 URL: https://commonyard.app/news/hidden-posts-photo-username/ Two small things you asked about. ## Hidden posts Hiding a post used to be a one-way trip. Now every post you hide is kept under **Settings → Help & legal → Hidden posts**, newest first, with **Show again** beside each. The note that pops up when you hide something has a **Hidden posts** button too. See [Find the posts you hid](/guides/hidden-posts/). ## Your photo and username, where they are On your profile, tap your picture to change it, and tap the pencil beside your **@username** to pick a new one. CommonYard checks the name is free as you type. And a photo you change now stays changed — signing in again no longer puts the old one back. See [Change your photo and username](/guides/change-your-photo-and-username/). --- # Every guide now shows you the screen > CommonYard's how-to guides now have pictures of the app itself — the button to tap and what you'll see — with made-up people and yards, never real accounts. Published: 2026-09-29 URL: https://commonyard.app/news/guides-with-pictures/ Reading "tap the three dots" is one thing; seeing them is better. CommonYard's [guides](/guides/) now show the app's own screens beside the steps. ## What's new - **Pictures in the guides** — the poll card before and after you vote, the petition bar while it fills, a swipey mid-swipe, the post screen, a yard's page and more. - **Three new guides**: [Post to several yards at once](/guides/post-to-several-yards/), [Play Guess the Number](/guides/guess-the-number/) and [Add your birthday](/guides/add-your-birthday/). - **Every guide checked** against the app as it is today. The people and yards in the pictures are invented. No member's account appears in them. --- # Sasabonsam: hide, and hope it doesn't find you > A new game for groups. Everybody hides in the yard; every round Sasabonsam searches one place, and the last one hiding sees the sunrise. It replaces The Floor Is Lava. Published: 2026-09-29 URL: https://commonyard.app/news/sasabonsam/ Sasabonsam followed the drums out of the forest, and it has come to CommonYard. ## How it plays - **Everybody hides.** When a round starts, tap a place in the yard. One tap and you're hidden — no moving after. - **It searches one place a round.** Anyone hiding there is taken. There are fewer places to hide every round. - **The last one hiding wins.** They see the sunrise. ## Two kinds of night - **Public survival** — anyone with the link, 5 to 100 players, last one standing. - **Yard vs Yard** — everybody hides for their own yard, and the last yard standing wins. A night can start when its host says, or by itself at a set time. Start one from **GAMES → TEAMS**, or from the **+**. Sasabonsam takes the place of The Floor Is Lava. See [Play Sasabonsam](/guides/play-sasabonsam/). --- # Yards get sub yards, a study shelf, and games of their own > A yard can now hold smaller yards — a hall, a class, the choir — that members join from its page. School yards get a shelf of study materials, and every yard's GAMES is its own. Published: 2026-09-29 URL: https://commonyard.app/news/yards-grow-inside/ Three things for the people who live in yards. ## Sub yards A big yard can now hold smaller ones: a hall inside a university, a class inside a school, the choir inside a church. Each has its own posts, chat and admins. The yard's owner and admins make them from **Manage yard → Sub yards**, and members see them near the top of the yard, with **Join** beside each. See [Sub yards](/guides/sub-yards/). ## A study shelf for school yards Under **PRACTICE**, school yards now have **Study materials**: slides, notes and past papers the yard's admins upload — PDF, PowerPoint, Word, Excel or text, up to 50 MB each — and every member can download. See [Share and download study materials](/guides/study-materials/). ## A yard's GAMES is its own Inside a yard, **GAMES** now opens that yard's own page: what it has on now and coming up, the yard's weekly leaderboard, its challenges against other yards, and everything it has already played. Nothing from other yards leaks in. See [Your yard's games and ladder](/guides/your-yards-games/). --- # CommonYard now has guides and news > A public home for how-tos and announcements, readable by people, search engines and AI assistants alike. Published: 2026-09-24 URL: https://commonyard.app/news/guides-and-news/ Starting today, CommonYard has a public home on the web for two things: **guides** and **news**. ## Guides The [guides](/guides/) are short how-tos, each one saying where to tap and what happens next. There are guides for getting started, voting, signing a petition, making a post, making and running a yard, playing games, points and streaks, and staying safe. More will come as the app grows. ## News This page is where announcements live — what is new in the app, what changed, and why. Newest first. If you use a news reader, follow the [news feed](/news/feed.xml). ## Readable by anyone, and by AI Everything here is plain text on plain pages, so it loads quickly on any phone and can be read by search engines and by AI assistants. If you ask an assistant how something on CommonYard works, these pages are where it can find the answer. For assistants, there is a short guide at [/llms.txt](/llms.txt) and everything in one file at [/llms-full.txt](/llms-full.txt). --- # GAMES looks like a game now > The GAMES door was redrawn as an arcade — a sky by day and stars by night, your player card up top, and big buttons for ROUNDS, SOLO and TEAMS. Published: 2026-09-24 URL: https://commonyard.app/news/games-is-an-arcade/ The GAMES door used to read like a list. Today it looks like what it is: a place to play. ## What changed - **A world behind it.** The whole page sits on a sky by day and a starry night after dark. - **Your player card up top.** Your place in the hall of fame, your wins, and a jump to the rounds coming up. - **Big buttons for the three parts**: ROUNDS to play with others, SOLO to play alone, and TEAMS for yard and friends games. - **Rounds as arcade cards** you can tap straight into. - **Solo games as a grid**, with one featured game on top. - **Halls of fame as podiums**, in each game's own colours. Nothing about how games are played has changed — only how the door looks. New to games? Start with [Play games on CommonYard](/guides/play-games/). --- # Points now come as one summary > Instead of an email and a notification for every vote, CommonYard adds up your points and tells you once in a while. Published: 2026-09-22 URL: https://commonyard.app/news/points-come-as-one-summary/ Almost everything you do on CommonYard earns points — a vote, a reply, a signature. Until today, every one of them sent you an email and a notification. On a busy evening that was a lot. ## What happens now - Your points are added up quietly as you earn them. - Then they arrive as **one email and one notification** for everything together — at most about once a week, at six in the evening, Accra time. - If you earn only a little, the summary waits until there's something worth telling, or three weeks, whichever comes first. - **A big game win** is the exception. You hear about that straight away. Your points themselves haven't changed — only how often we tell you about them. See [Points, streaks and your figures](/guides/points-and-streaks/). --- # Troll War: the crowd decides > Troll War battles are now won by reactions, not votes. Every reaction on a comeback is a point for its corner — and fighters can't react to their own side. Published: 2026-09-22 URL: https://commonyard.app/news/troll-war-the-crowd-decides/ Troll War is a battle of comebacks, and from today the crowd decides it directly. ## How it works now - **Reactions are the score.** Every reaction on a comeback in the arena is one point for that comeback's corner, shown as it lands. - **The most reactions wins** when the clock runs out. Level is a draw. - **Fighters can't cheer themselves.** Players and captains can't react in the arena. The supporters' room stays open to everyone, and it doesn't touch the score. - **Voting is gone.** No more ballots or judges' panels — the room decides. ## Also new: challenge anyone When you start a Troll War with friends, you can now search for anyone by their username and challenge them. They get a notification. If they are slow to answer, tap **Remind** — once every half hour — and you're told when they take their seat. See [Play Troll War](/guides/play-troll-war/). --- # Yards get the tools to run them > Moderation, join requests, a notice and announcements, events with reminders, yard pictures, handing over, and better ways to find a yard. Published: 2026-09-22 URL: https://commonyard.app/news/yards-get-tools-to-run-them/ A yard is only as good as the people who run it, so today they get proper tools. Everything below is in **Manage yard**: open your yard, tap its name at the top. ## Keeping it kind Owners, admins and mods can **take down** a post from the yard, and put it back if it was a mistake. ## Who gets in A yard can be open to **anyone with the link**, need **admin approval**, or take **nobody new for now**. When someone asks to join, admins get a notification; when they are let in, so do they. ## A voice for the yard - **The notice** sits at the top of the yard. - **Announce to the yard** sends one post to every member, once a day. ## Events Admins can **add an event** with what, where and when. Members say they're coming and get a reminder an hour before. ## The yard itself - A **picture** for the yard. - **Hand the yard to someone** else, or **archive** it and bring it back later. - For a new yard's first week, a starter card with three things to get it going. - Members can see who else is in their yard. ## Finding a yard Search now finds yards members made, not just official ones. Open yards are ordered by how lively they are, can be narrowed to School, Faith or General, and yards that need approval show **Ask to join**. And a yard's link now shows a proper preview when you share it on WhatsApp and elsewhere. ## Posts stay where they're made A post made in a yard is seen by that yard only, and the composer says so before you post. Read [Run your yard](/guides/run-your-yard/) for the full how-to. --- # Your petition signature is now private > Petitions show how many people signed and how the sides split — never who signed, or which side anyone chose. Published: 2026-09-22 URL: https://commonyard.app/news/petition-signatures-are-private/ Signing a petition is a public act. Who signed it shouldn't be. Until today, a petition could show a wall of the people who had signed, their faces, and some of their names. From today it doesn't. ## What a petition shows now - How many people signed. - How the sides split: agree, not sure and disagree. ## What it never shows - Who signed. - Which side any one person chose. Your signature is private. The people who run CommonYard can still look at a signature when they need to act on a report — the same as anything else that gets reported. Nothing else about signing changes: choose your side, then press and hold until the button fills. See [Sign a petition](/guides/sign-a-petition/). --- # Every poll now says when it closes > When you make a poll you choose when it closes — a day, three days, a week or no end — and voters see it on the card. Published: 2026-09-21 URL: https://commonyard.app/news/every-poll-says-when-it-closes/ Polls used to run forever. Now every poll has a closing time that its maker chooses. ## Making a poll Under **When it closes**, pick **a day**, **3 days**, **a week** or **no end**. A week is picked for you. ## Changing it later Open your poll's ⋯ menu and tap **Edit post**. You can close it now, or move its closing time. Changing only the words leaves the closing time alone. ## What voters see The card says when the poll closes — "closes in 3 days", "closes in an hour". Once it closes it takes no more votes and shows its result. See [Make a poll](/guides/make-a-poll/). --- # RateYourSociety now lives in CommonYard > rateyoursociety.com opens on Ghana's Mood, and the rest of RateYourSociety has moved into CommonYard. One account works for both. Published: 2026-09-21 URL: https://commonyard.app/news/rateyoursociety-lives-in-commonyard/ RateYourSociety (RYS) started in June 2023 as a place for Ghanaians to rate society, share opinions and take a public stand. From today, its home is CommonYard. ## What this means - **rateyoursociety.com opens on Ghana's Mood**, RYS's own page, with a button into CommonYard. - **Everything else moved in.** RYS's other pages now open in CommonYard, and old RYS links bring you here. - **One account.** If you had an RYS account, sign in to CommonYard the same way and you're in. RateYourSociety isn't a new name for CommonYard. It is its own thing, and now it lives here, beside yards, games and chat. --- # Two games to play alone — Penalty Flick and Hot Potato > Flick penalties past a keeper who keeps getting faster, or pass a potato before it burns. Both have a hall of fame. Published: 2026-09-16 URL: https://commonyard.app/news/two-games-to-play-alone/ Two games you can play on your own, any time, from **GAMES → SOLO**. ## Penalty Flick Swipe to flick the ball past a keeper who walks from post to post — slowly at first, then faster and faster. A save or a shot wide costs a life, and you have three. Pick the country you play for from about seventy, Ghana first. Your best score goes into the Penalty Flick hall of fame. ## Hot Potato Pass the potato around a ring of game characters before it burns you. Every round it gets hotter and the time you can hold it gets shorter. Your best run goes into the Hot Potato hall of fame. See [Play games on CommonYard](/guides/play-games/). --- # Part 4 — Past and practice questions (University of Ghana courses) Every school yard on CommonYard comes with Practice.
